Dog Training Article: Fetch and Come When Called
Just getting home and don’t have time to walk the dog? This program gives your dog a skill which will provide your dog with a vigorous exercise, allowing him to expend energy when you don’t have half an hour to walk him. Five minutes of playing FETCH will exhaust even the most robust hound, and can be used for those times your dog’s been cooped up all day, needs his exercise, but you’ve got to head out again to pick up the kids from practice.
The game of FETCH will enforce your role as your dog’s leader, and instill in your dog he role is to be submissive to you. Toys are your possession. His access to them comes only through you. Maybe you want your dog to be a bit more settled when company comes? A good game of Fetch will have his tongue hanging out, redirect that energy, and he’ll be ready to settle down nicely in his crate or his bed. And who isn’t proud to show off a dog catching a Frisbee in mid-air, or who will charge after a ball and bring it back enthusiastically?!
Your dog will learn to retrieve a ball, toy or Frisbee (we don’t decide, he does) and drop it at your feet for a reward. He’ll learn to relinquish the item at your command, sit, and wait for the next throw. He’ll learn to hold his enthusiasm until he is given the command to FETCH, and build his character in doing so. He’ll learn to do these things while being distracted.
This is not the OFFLEASH recall taught in AKC Novice Guaranteed.
